Tips for Secure your Home
When you are out of town...
- Lock all doors and windows when you leave.
- Avoid leaving information regarding your absence on your answering machine.
- Activate timers on indoor and outdoor lights, and on radios or televisions.
- Hire someone to mow the lawn in the summer or to shovel the walkway in the winter.
- Arrange to have your newspaper and mail stopped, or ask someone to pick them up daily.
- Before leaving, install a monitored security system with visible window stickers to deter would-be thieves.
Home Secure Checklist
- Do exterior doors use deadbolt locks with a minimum one inch throw?
- Are sliding glass doors and windows fitted with adequate locks to prevent them from being pried open, or completely lifted out of the frame?
- Do you hide house keys in planters, in the mailbox, or under the doormat? Burglars know these tricks. Give a key to a trusted neighbor instead.
- Is your address clearly visible from the street (day or night)?
- Have you installed motion sensitive floodlights?
- Are all entrances to your home well lit at night (doors, windows, porches, etc.)?
- Are trees and shrubs trimmed to ensure visibility of all entrances points around your home?
- Have ladders or tools that could be used to gain access to your home been locked up?
- Do you have a monitored home security system?
